What is Asbestos ?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral. There are six types, all of which are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each fiber being composed of many microscopic “fibrils” that can be released into the atmosphere by abrasion and other processes.
types of asbestos
There are six main types of asbestos. Each type belongs to the serpentine or amphibole asbestos mineral family. Chrysotile asbestos (White asbestos) is the only serpentine type. All others are classified as amphibole asbestos.
- Chrysotile (white asbestos)
- Actinolite
- Amosite (brown asbestos)
- Anthophyllite
- Crocidolite (blue asbestos)
- Tremolite
health hazards
Asbestos is considered the number one occupational health killer in the second
half of the twentieth century. Asbestos related diseases are developing slowly, it
takes 10-30 years for it to develop after its initial exposure.
Asbestos-related diseases include mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis and other illnesses.
Asbestos has been banned entirely in 39 countries since 1983, including the European Union, Argentina, Australia, Chile, Croatia and Saudi Arabia. Other countries are either severely restricting its use or phasing it out over a specified period of time.
what is Asbestos used for ?
Because it has heat-resistant and insulating properties, asbestos was used in a wide range of manufactured products. Before 1990, asbestos was mainly used by industry, construction, and commercial sectors in products such as:
- Building materials (roofing shingles, roof sealants, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products and felts, house siding, and asbestos-containing cement and plaster products)
- Friction materials (automobile clutch pads, brake linings, pads and shoes, and transmission parts).
- Fire and heat protection wear – (Insulating property) Industrial furnaces and heating systems.
- Packing materials, gaskets, linings, and coatings.
- Filler in resins, plastics and caulking and in asphalt road surfacing.
